If you prefer not to use MailChimp, you may use any email marketing program, (for example Constant Contact, iContact, Campaign Monitor, etc.) - however in this case you would need to manually import and export your lists instead of the automated data flow provided for MailChimp, and you would need to manually sync subscribes and unsubscribes - whereas with MailChimp this is all automated.
