If a customer account has orders associated with it, you cannot delete it because it would mess up the database.
If a specific customer account has no orders associated with it, it can be deleted by scrolling to the bottom of the customer record summary page (arrived at by clicking on the customer's last name on the customer list page) and clicking the delete customer in the bottom left.
If a customer has multiple records and you wish to consolidate them into a single record, you may do so by following the directions in this article in the Support Center.
If there are multiple inactive customer accounts that are eligible for deletion, you may do so in the customer cleanup section referenced in the linked article above.
